The strain reaches a height of 20-30 m and a thickness of 40 cm. It makes no spur and the fronds resemble fish fins. Here it grows slowly, as it need much warmth. Blossoms after 30-40 years and then dies.
In India the flower spathe is tapped for its sweet sap and to make palmwine. Its durable black fibre is used for cordage and for brooms.
