Sea grape

The shrub is grown for its nice foliage. The fresh leaves are brilliant, bright red while the flowers are unimpressive.

It was a popular house plant in Victorian times before the rise in popularity of the Indian rubber plant.

The purple fruits resembling bunches of grapes are used for jelly and liqueur.

Its small core of hard wood, brilliantly striped with red, black and yellow is much used by cabinet and musical instrument makers for decorative work.
