On Tuesday, Maya the Bee and her friends delighted our guests, bringing joy to both children and adults. It was a heartwarming moment that connected generations.

In the afternoon, 22 classic cars arrived at the hotel after touring the Orotava Valley. Many of the drivers are long-standing friends of the house. Sharing lunch together brought back fond memories of the classic car rallies we once organised through the valley — a beautiful reminder of tradition and friendship.

On Ash Wednesday, dinner at Restaurant Jardín became a unique experience as our traditional “widows” appeared, keeping alive a long-standing Tenerife Carnival custom. Guests enjoyed their meal immersed in authentic carnival spirit.

In the following days, even our garden joined the celebration. A group of ikebana specialists created a stunning ephemeral exhibition, transforming part of our green space into a refined artistic display.

For us, Carnival is more than a celebration. It is identity, memory and shared joy — and we are always grateful to experience it together with our guests at Tigaiga.

Organised by the European Travel Commission (ETC) and co-hosted by MEP Daniel Attard (S&D) and MEP Nikolina Brnjac (EPP), the exhibition is taking place from 26–30 January 2026.

The exhibition showcases 35 best practices from European destinations, demonstrating how tourism can be a force for good, supporting communities, restoring nature, and strengthening local economies.

To mark the Agatha Christie Festival (organized by the CIT Puerto de la Cruz), which this week fills the streets of our city with mystery and culture, we want to share a small discovery that has transported us to the past of the Gran Hotel Taoro and, with it, to the early days of our family’s history in Tenerife.

The Scent of Time

When the 10th edition of the Agatha Christie Festival begins in Puerto de la Cruz, the air seems heavier, as if it carries with it the echoes of a bygone era. Among the palm trees in the Taoro gardens, the sound of footsteps from former guests mingles with the Atlantic breeze. It was there, in that majestic hotel overlooking the valley, that Agatha Christie found both tranquility and mystery. And it was also there, among the corridors of the Taoro, that a young German manager, Enrique Talg Schulz, worked, who would one day build his own dream on this very hill: the Hotel Tigaiga.

And it was in the area known as the Carolina Garden where the staff of the Grand Hotel changed before starting their shifts; their days passed there amidst the bustle of the service and the murmur of the guests. Today, that corner is silence and greenery, but it recently revealed a secret to us. When the soil was disturbed in recent years, old bottles appeared, covered by a patina of time, as if they had been waiting to be found. They are transparent bottles with the front embossed in the glass itself with molded letters in understated capitals, an Art Deco typeface: clean lines and regular spacing.

On one, you can still read the name Ed. Pinaud, the Parisian firm founded in 1830 that perfumed the Belle Époque with elegant colognes and lotions, used on ships and in luxury hotels around the world. Perhaps that bottle belonged to a chambermaid who dreamed of smelling of roses instead of soap, or to an English guest who wrote perfumed letters at dusk. Perhaps, who knows, one of them left its fragrance in the air as Agatha Christie walked through the lobby, observing with her novelist’s eye the human theater that so inspired her stories.

On another bottle, we discover the text in clear lettering of Crusellas y Cía., made in Havana. Its round shape and clear glass reveal that it was manufactured between 1910 and 1930, a time when the Crusellas house began producing more delicate bottles to highlight the color of the perfume. It contained one of its most popular fragrances: “A la Flora Cubana,” a floral cologne that crossed oceans carrying with it the exoticism of the Caribbean.

To think that these bottles rested in the surroundings of the old Taoro, where Agatha Christie breathed inspiration and Enrique Talg dreamed of his future hotel, fills us with wonder. Perhaps one of those essences perfumed a dressing table, a letter, or a moment lost to time.

Today, those bottles rest among us once more, silent witnesses to an era when luxury smelled of flowers, and elegance traveled in glass flasks. With each discovery, we feel the past return to perfume our present: a living memory nestled between the gardens of Taoro and the spirit of Tigaiga.

We’re delighted to share that our former garden.tigaiga page has now been fully integrated into our main website, tigaiga.com. This means you can now explore our plants and green corners more easily and smoothly, all in one place.

With this update, each plant profile can be accessed much faster and updated directly, keeping all information fresh and alive – just like our garden itself.

For us, this is more than a technical improvement. It’s another way of connecting the values we care most about – nature, hospitality, and sustainability – and sharing them with everyone who feels part of the Tigaiga family.

In recent months, we have completed several important renovations that enhance efficiency, sustainability, and service quality:

• the complete renewal of the low-voltage installation throughout the entire basement, ensuring greater electrical safety and stable operation;
• the installation of a shared photovoltaic system, allowing us to generate clean energy and reduce our carbon footprint;
• the new flooring in the entire kitchen, which is more hygienic, safer, and more comfortable for our team’s daily work;
• the integrated overhaul of the air-conditioning system, which provides greater efficiency, improved climate control, and optimal comfort throughout the hotel and
• now the refurbishment of the machine room, with modernized equipment that optimizes energy consumption

These improvements bring numerous advantages: increased safety across all facilities, energy savings and sustainability, more pleasant and functional workspaces for our team, and an overall more efficient, quieter, and more comfortable operation of our technical systems. With every step, we remain true to our philosophy: to offer a hotel that is safer, more comfortable, and more environmentally friendly.

Ingredients:

• 150 g unsalted butter, softened
• 80 g dried figs (stems removed, finely chopped or blended)
• 1 tablespoon honey (optional, for extra sweetness)
• ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
• A pinch of salt

Instructions:

1. Chop the figs very finely or pulse in a food processor until paste-like.
2. In a bowl, combine the softened butter, fig paste, honey (if using), cinnamon, and salt.
3. Mix well until smooth and fully combined.
4. Spoon into a small jar or ramekin and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to let the flavors meld.

Let it soften slightly before serving.

Carnival Festivities at the Tigaiga

On Wednesday our restaurant team joined in to make sure our guests experienced the joy of the season. The traditional Funny Widows costumes once again brought smiles and laughter, creating a lively and unforgettable atmosphere.

And today, even though the weather surprised us with rain today and the big parade had to be postponed, our spirits remained high! We brought the celebration indoors, filling our reception with laughter, music, and dance – because Carnival is not just an event, it’s a way of life.

Carnival Parade Next Week – We’re Ready!

The Puerto de la Cruz Carnival Parade, originally scheduled for today, has been postponed to next week – but that only means more excitement to come! The streets will soon be transformed into a colorful spectacle of costumes, music, and dancing, as we celebrate together with locals and visitors alike.

We can’t wait to continue the festivities with you – whether at the hotel or on the vibrant streets of Puerto de la Cruz. Viva el Carnaval!
