For us, being part of the “Tourism for Europe” initiative, presented at the European Parliament, is one of those moments.

We are especially proud to have been selected as the representative of Spain for this project. The European Travel Commission platform brings together initiatives from across Europe that demonstrate how tourism can be a positive force for people, places, and local economies.

At Hotel Tigaiga, we have long followed a clear vision: caring for our environment, supporting the local community, and inspiring our guests to travel more consciously.https://tourismforeurope.eu/experiences/nature/circular-hospitality-regenerating-tenerife-through-tourism

Being part of this project encourages us to continue on this path and to share our way of understanding tourism.

We look forward to welcoming you to the Tigaiga BIENVENIDOS

We’re delighted to share that our former garden.tigaiga page has now been fully integrated into our main website, tigaiga.com. This means you can now explore our plants and green corners more easily and smoothly, all in one place.

With this update, each plant profile can be accessed much faster and updated directly, keeping all information fresh and alive – just like our garden itself.

For us, this is more than a technical improvement. It’s another way of connecting the values we care most about – nature, hospitality, and sustainability – and sharing them with everyone who feels part of the Tigaiga family.

We warmly invite you to take a virtual stroll through our garden online – and of course, to enjoy it in person during your next visit.

Tourism is undeniably a key economic driver, bringing prosperity to many destinations worldwide. However, it also presents challenges that can significantly impact local environments and communities. In a recent feature by ITN’s Transformational Travel section, our representative in sustainability, Irene Talg, was interviewed to discuss how tourism can evolve to be more sustainable and community-focused.

Environmental Preservation and Community Engagement
The Canary Islands, a hotspot for global tourism, has implemented forward-thinking strategies to ensure that its tourism industry does not come at the cost of environmental degradation. Central to this effort is the collaboration between government bodies, local businesses, and communities. The Canary Islands Tourism Board has introduced a digital tool that allows tourism companies to measure their carbon footprint and create action plans for climate protection.

A Commitment to Responsible Travel
The conversation with Irene Talg underscored the importance of responsible tourism practices. As travelers become more conscientious about their environmental impact, it is essential that destinations continue to offer ways for tourists to enjoy their visit while minimizing their carbon footprint.

At our organization, we are proud to be part of this movement, continuously working toward tourism that respects the planet, supports local communities, and provides unforgettable experiences for travelers.

In the media, the Canary Islands have recently come into focus, primarily due to reports on the large-scale demonstrations against mass tourism. The demonstration on April 20, 2024, in Santa Cruz was an expression of the growing concern among locals about the impact of mass tourism on their quality of life.

However, Tenerife is much more than just a popular tourist destination. The island stands out for its diversity, both in terms of tourism and landscape, as well as culturally. It is characterized by the bustling centers of mass tourism in the south, as well as the quiet, authentic places in other parts of the island.

As the Talg family, we place great importance on highlighting this diversity while actively working on solutions to address all challenges. We are aware that tourism plays a vital role in the island’s economic development, but it is also essential to consider the needs and concerns of the local population and the environment.

Therefore, we strongly advocate for sustainable tourism that combines economic, social, and environmental sustainability. For over 65 years, we have worked closely with local communities and organizations to find solutions that meet the needs of both tourists and locals.

At the Tigaiga, we see ourselves as part of the solution: ee are proud to actively promote sustainable tourism and continue to contribute to the positive development of our beautiful island.

In terms of the module Project Management in Practice of the bachelor’s degree in tourism, the project team conducted a project week in a tourism destination to do research on-site to a tourism-related research topic. The project team decided to have a closer look at the island of Tenerife and focus on preventing waste produced in the accommodations on the touristic island. The project team collaborated with different partner companies in Tenerife to get more information about best practice examples on how to prevent waste in the hospitality industry which can then be implemented by other accommodations. The goal of the project was to analyse the current waste prevention strategies in tourist accommodations of Tenerife because the project team wanted to learn about solutions to prevent waste produced by accommodations in Tenerife in order to establish a set of best practice examples which can be implemented by accommodations in Tenerife. To conduct the research the project team chose a qualitative method. They mainly gathered the data through interviews and then
analysed the investigations. They discovered that accommodations in Tenerife already have some great examples of best practices which can also be implemented by other accommodations.
This report aims to deliver an overview of the project study week abroad in Tenerife and answer the research questions. Besides that, the report will include details about the selected business partners and the evaluation of the interview, the relationship management, the comparison of the target vs actual accomplishments, the time management, the financial plan, the risk management, and the evaluation of the communication plan and the quality management plan, as well as reflective learning of each of the group members. During the project, the project team wanted to have clear communication within the team, with the project client and the accompanying lecturer. Furthermore, it was aimed to gain practice-oriented project management experience for a future career in the tourism industry.

Every year, we have the opportunity to demonstrate that tourism and biodiversity can coexist in perfect harmony. In the Canary Islands, home to the Cory’s Shearwater, the most abundant species of marine bird in these waters, an astonishing natural phenomenon takes place. During the months of October and November, young Cory’s Shearwater fledglings, on their maiden flight from the nest to the sea, are drawn to the lights of coastal developments. Unable to ascend on their own, these vulnerable birds are at risk of collisions and predation.

This year, from October 28 to November 10, 2023, coinciding with the new moon, the days of greatest risk are anticipated. For this reason, our contribution is essential to preserve this endangered species.

We are delighted to announce that Hotel Tigaiga has once again joined the “El Primer Viaje” initiative. Our participation in this noble cause focuses on two fundamental objectives:

Measures at our facilities to protect the birds: Reduction of outdoor lighting and activation of rescue protocols.

Information and awareness campaigns: Targeted at our employees and guests to educate them about the challenges facing this species.

We invite you to join our mission to preserve the unique biodiversity of the Canary Islands. Learn more about our collaboration with “El Primer Viaje” and how you can contribute by visiting https://elprimerviaje.org/

We are pleased that some results of the research work related to water management in the tourism field that has been carried out by the Economic, Accounting and Financial Management Research Group of the water of the University of La Laguna, thanks to the collaboration of the Hotel Tigaiga , have recently been published in the scientific journal Water.
